In a powerful episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay sits down with Ari DeLashmutt. He is an extreme sports athlete, transformational men’s coach and also, the host of his own podcast. He is known for his fearless lifestyle and equally courageous self-inquiry. Ari offers an unflinching look at how men fall into the trap of victim mentality and what it takes to reclaim personal agency.
Ari’s journey into men’s work begins with personal reckoning. “I came across a presentation on peaceful parenting on YouTube, and it turned me onto moral philosophy,” he shares. This early spark led him to years of introspection and conversations with philosophers. This eventually led to professional men’s coaching. “Developing myself as an athlete was huge, but it was always paralleled by my deep desire to be a good partner, a good person, and have great friendships.”
Ari speaks openly about pivotal life moments. He talks about particularly a painful divorce after an eight-year relationship. “It was an incredible inflection point in my life,” he recalls. Ari began to examine his own defensiveness, emotional insecurities, and relational patterns. Then the heartbreak became a catalyst for growth. “I didn’t have the skills to listen from a place of security. I took everything hyper personally.”
Now, Ari works directly with men who’ve faced similar struggles. Men navigating breakup recovery or searching for meaning in midlife, he helps them all. His message is clear. Personal responsibility is non-negotiable if you want to build emotional resilience.
Central to Ari’s philosophy is dismantling the victim mentality that pervades modern masculinity. “Our society globally has victim mentality as the juiciest thing,” Ari observes. Men often stay trapped in cycles of blame, excuses, and resentment because it offers immediate social validation. “You get to tell your friends how hard your life is, and people will listen. But it disconnects you from your own agency.”
Ari explains that victim mentality manifests through constant justification. “There’s a voice in your head, a justification narrative, that validates your emotions and behaviors no matter what. Without recognizing this, you’re essentially a fish that doesn’t know it’s in water.” His advice is direct: ask yourself what you’re getting from your victim position. Are you seeking sympathy, attention, or a way to avoid hard truths? Once you identify the payoff, you can begin the work of reclaiming your power.
Ari recommends focusing on integrity coaching. Especially for men looking to break free from destructive emotional patterns. It is the practice of aligning actions with personal values and emotional needs. “Most men don’t realize why they have emotions in the first place,” he explains. “Emotions point you toward your needs. Anger means a boundary’s been crossed. Tiredness means you need rest.”
Instead of chasing fleeting happiness, Ari advocates pursuing integrity and personal alignment. “Whether you’re in integrity with yourself is a much better aim. It gives you resilience, it guides you through adversity.” This mindset shift is essential for breakup recovery. It also helps with career challenges, or rebuilding after mistakes. It’s also crucial for developing emotional intelligence. It helps in understanding your feelings, needs, and triggers rather than projecting them onto others.
While therapy has value, Ari and Marc agree that traditional talk therapy can fall short for men. “Men bounce off therapy because it’s all insight and no action,” Marc observes. Ari adds, “They’re looking for support, but what they get is someone who just listens.”
As an alternative, Ari recommends group work and action-oriented coaching spaces. These help men to hold each other accountable. “You walk into a group like mine with a victim mentality, those guys will eat you alive,” he laughs. This masculine community dynamic encourages men to ditch excuses. It helps them lean into leadership, discipline, and integrity.
One of Ari’s most practical pieces of relationship advice is deceptively simple: stop complaining. He shares a story about choosing not to whine when his flight was delayed. “I just deleted the emojis and victim mentality from my text. I was like, ‘I am that I have no complaints.’” This mindset opens up space for gratitude, meaningful conversation, and unexpected connection. It’s a daily practice of choosing agency over helplessness, integrity over blame.
Ari reminds listeners that responsibility isn’t a burden — it’s a gateway to possibility. “The gates of hell are locked from the inside,” he quotes. Men who confront their victim mentality discover a liberating truth. Their emotional experience, actions, and narratives are within their control. Whether through group work or integrity coaching, every man can reclaim his life and purpose. “The game begins when you stop being a victim,” Ari concludes.
