Numbness and the Modern Man: Why Today’s Men Are More Disconnected Than Ever?

Numbness and the Modern Man: Why Today’s Men Are More Disconnected Than Ever?

November 19, 2025

Many men describe themselves as “chill,” unbothered, or simply “fine.” But as Marc Azoulay explains in this episode, fine is not always peace. It is often an emotional shutdown. Marc reflects on the quiet epidemic of emotional numbness shaping men’s lives today. “What if your fine is not peace? It’s shut down. What if it’s an emotional shutdown? It’s not strength, it’s numbness. And the cost is everything.”

Marc is guiding listeners through one of the most misunderstood emotional states men experience: numbness. Through relatable examples from clinical experience, he paints the story of men who lose touch with their emotional worlds without even noticing it. One client, for example, comes in reporting low intimacy in his marriage only to realize that the issue is not desire. But a complete emotional flatline “across the board, not just in his relationship, but in workouts, hobbies, friendships and everything.”

This episode tells the story of how numbness develops, how it disguises itself as composure, and why so many men mistake shutdown for resilience. Marc shares how cultural conditioning trains boys to “man up”. It sheds light on how men push emotions away until the nervous system slips into detachment and dissociation. He also describes the moment many men can pinpoint as the beginning of their emotional shutdown. Such as the client who realized he “stopped feeling” the day his father was diagnosed with cancer.

In this unfolding narrative, Marc is guiding men back to themselves. He is helping them understand numbness not as a flaw, but as a protective strategy that has simply worn out its usefulness. And more importantly, he is showing listeners how to feel again.

Understanding the Difference Between Peace and Numbness

Emotional numbness often masquerades as calm, but the internal experience could not be more different. As Marc explains, peace is expansive, grounded, and present, while numbness is tight, contracted, and disconnected. “When you’re peaceful, you’re living in harmony. You’re aware of what’s around you and aware of the feelings you’re having.”

Numbness, on the other hand, comes from nervous dysregulation. Men may look composed, but internally they are either in hyperarousal or hypoarousal. Hyperarousal is marked by racing thoughts, anxiety and compulsive distraction. And hypoarousal is marked by lethargy, fatigue, and emotional flatness. This detachment becomes a default state when the nervous system is overwhelmed repeatedly.

Why Men Slip Into Emotional Shutdown

Marc explains that emotional shutdown is rarely intentional. Instead, it is learned early and reinforced throughout adulthood. Many men are taught that feelings slow them down, weaken them, or distract them from the mission. “There’s value in being able to compartmentalize,” Marc acknowledges, “but when we live in that state all the time, we never learn how to feel.”

Trauma also plays a powerful role in long-term numbness. Whether it’s childhood instability, bullying, chaotic households, or acute traumatic experiences, the nervous system may freeze to survive. The result is not strength, it’s emotional shutdown masquerading as stoicism.

In many cases, numbness becomes a survival strategy. Men learn early that shutting down avoids embarrassment, rejection, or pain. Over time, this avoidance becomes automatic. Marc describes how this can look externally like procrastination, self-sabotage, or being emotionally unavailable.

Signs You’re “Fine” but Actually Numb

Marc outlines several clinical indicators of emotional numbness that many men miss:

When these patterns become chronic, men may escalate behaviours. Overworking, compulsive exercise, porn, alcohol, or gaming. They do this in search of a sensation that cuts through the numbness.

Tools to Break Through the Numbness and Feel Again

Marc emphasizes that the goal is not to avoid emotions but to master them. “Calm is not a win. Feeling is.” The episode outlines three powerful strategies that help men reconnect with themselves:

1. Mindfulness to Rebuild Emotional Awareness

When a feeling arises, even numbness, pause and name it. Marc explains: “Say it out loud. ‘Right now I feel angry. I feel upset, bored and numb.’” This builds an internal map of your emotional landscape and begins reconnecting the mind to the body.

2. Somatic Micro-Resets for Nervous System Regulation

When the system is stuck in detachment, a somatic reset can interrupt the freeze state. Inspired by DBT, Marc suggests: “Splash cold water on your face. Do high-intensity breathing. Engage in a quick exercise circuit.” These shifts help move the body out of hypoarousal and back into presence.

3. Taking Emotional Risks and Reconnecting Socially

Marc encourages men to tell someone close: “I’ve been feeling numb.” Bringing others into the process builds accountability, connection, and support. Men’s groups, including the free Slack channel at Men’s Therapy Online, offer a community. It reinforces change. Weekly check-ins, emotional code words, and small rituals help rebuild resilience.

Conclusion

Numbness is not a superpower. It is a shield that eventually blocks out everything, including joy, intimacy, drive, and purpose. Marc’s message is clear: men are not meant to be robotic and detached. They are meant to be present, connected, and emotionally intelligent. The path back begins with awareness, continues with nervous system regulation, and deepens through courageous emotional engagement. When men learn to feel again, they don’t lose control; they gain mastery.
