In this episode of Men’s Therapy Podcast, Marc highlights the importance of shadow work for men. “You think you’re the nice guy. You never raise your voice, you always say yes, you avoid conflict. But behind that politeness is often a man full of anger, resentment, and even self-hatred,” says Marc Azoulay. Drawing from his clinical work with men, Marc reveals how many men wear a mask of agreeableness. They do this to survive chaotic or emotionally unstable childhood environments. “If you grew up in a home with an abusive or narcissistic parent, you learned early that fighting back only made things worse. So you became compliant, you became the nice guy.”
This compliance often leads to deep emotional repression. Anger doesn’t disappear but instead festers beneath the surface. “The longer you keep that anger buried,” he warns, “the more it leaks out as resentment, passive aggression, and even self-destruction.”
Marc’s insights lay bare a universal truth for men navigating toxic masculinity and a desperate desire to be seen as “good.” The path to healing, he insists, lies not in perfection but in integration, an honest reckoning with the self through shadow work.
According to Marc, Nice Guy Syndrome isn’t about kindness. It’s about avoidance. It begins with childhood trauma, where a boy learns that being “nice” is safer than being real. Over time, this strategy becomes a core identity, shaping careers, relationships, and self-worth.
“These men are successful on paper,” Marc observes. “They’re high achievers, great partners, dependable friends. But inside, they’re angry at being overlooked, angry at being taken advantage of, and angry at themselves for not speaking up.”
This chronic people pleasing comes with a cost: emotional burnout and internalized resentment. The suppressed anger often manifests as passive aggression, sarcasm, or emotional withdrawal. “Sarcasm,” Marc notes, “is covert anger. It’s bitterness disguised as humour. It’s what happens when honesty feels dangerous.”
The antidote begins with self-awareness. “You can’t heal what you won’t name,” Marc emphasizes. “Start by admitting you’re angry. That doesn’t make you broken. It makes you honest.”
A recurring theme in Marc’s work is what Dr. Robert Glover calls covert contracts. These are unspoken agreements men create to earn love, validation, or sex. “These contracts are built on expectations,” Marc explains. “A man might think, ‘If I do everything right, clean the house, earn money, take care of the kids, then I’ll be rewarded with affection.’ But when that doesn’t happen, he feels betrayed. Even though his partner never agreed to that deal.”
These unspoken bargains lead to chronic frustration and fractured relationships. Over time, unexpressed needs turn into emotional repression and resentment. They even turn into health issues like high blood pressure and fatigue. “Covert contracts,” Marc says, “are the silent killers of intimacy. Shadow work helps you see where those hidden expectations come from. It lets you finally take responsibility for them.”
At the core of this conversation is shadow work. It is the process of exploring and integrating the disowned parts of oneself. For Marc, this is the key to transforming anger into strength and shame into authenticity. “The ‘shadow’ isn’t evil. It’s just everything we’ve pushed away,” he explains. “For men, that might be vulnerability, fear, sadness, or even desire. By facing your shadow, you make the mask less fake and the shadow less destructive.”
Marc likens the process to reclaiming lost energy: “When you stop pretending to be only ‘the good guy,’ you gain access to your full power. You become an integrated man. Strong, grounded, and emotionally intelligent.”
He encourages men to begin small. Practice naming anger in low-stakes moments. Use “I” statements to express frustration, and join men’s groups where honesty is met with understanding instead of judgment. “You don’t have to fix it,” Marc reminds his listeners. “You just have to name it.”
For many men, the idea of anger management feels like suppression. But Marc reframes it as an expression with awareness. “Anger isn’t the enemy, it’s a messenger,” he says. “It tells you where your boundaries have been crossed.”
Through therapy and community, men can learn to acknowledge and manage their anger rather than fear it. This is where emotional intelligence plays a crucial role. Understanding not just what you feel, but why. “Shadow work teaches men to turn anger into assertiveness, fear into compassion, and resentment into connection,” Marc concludes. “That’s the real work of personal growth.”
Marc Azoulay shines a light on the quiet crisis many men face, living as ghosts behind their own masks. Through shadow work, self-awareness, and honest dialogue, he invites men to confront their hidden pain and reclaim their full selves. As Marc reminds his listeners, “You can’t be authentic without being honest. The courage to face your shadow is what makes you whole.”
