On this episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay welcomes Zach Watson. He is a mental coach and certified Fair Play facilitator. He is known for his candid online presence and viral Mental Load series on TikTok. Zach is using his platform to educate men about the invisible labor that exists in every relationship. He also focuses on how to take accountability for it.
Zach’s journey begins humbly. He’s a new father adjusting to paternity leave and helping at home. Without realizing it, he finds himself adding to his wife’s mental load. “I remember saying out loud, ‘I think I just added mental load for my wife,’ and it hit me,” he recalls. This reflection turns into a viral video, sparking the Mental Load series that now exceeds 300 episodes.
Zach’s unique blend of vulnerability and practicality strikes a chord. “I didn’t just get it from the start,” he says. “I learned it — mostly from women who’ve done the emotional labor of teaching me.” His goal now is to pass that learning forward by helping men build emotional literacy. He helps them to dismantle outdated gender roles and step fully into co-leadership within their homes.
Zach draws a clear distinction between mental load and emotional labor. These two terms are often conflated in discussions about household responsibilities. “Mental load is the logistical, left-brained stuff. It is like remembering to schedule doctor appointments or making the grocery list,” he explains. “Emotional labor is the worry: Will they feel hurt if I forget? Will they think less of me?”
These invisible forms of work often go unacknowledged. Especially by men raised in households where gender roles are traditional and compartmentalized. Zach’s mission is to bring these dynamics into the light and give men the vocabulary to talk about them constructively.
At the heart of Zach’s message is the need to examine and revise traditional gender roles. “Equality is a great North Star,” he says, “but equity is what makes a relationship work day-to-day.” Zach encourages couples to divide household tasks. They should do so based on strengths, preferences, and fairness, not outdated norms. He focuses on this through the Fair Play Method,
The consequences of rigid gender roles often show up as resentment in relationships. Zach shares that his marriage nearly ended in 2018 due to an imbalance in responsibility. “She was doing all the thinking, all the deciding — and I was just letting it happen. That loneliness broke us apart,” he says. It’s only through shared accountability and intentional conversations that they begin to rebuild.
To repair and prevent relationship conflict, Zach recommends weekly check-ins. He focuses on shared vocabulary as powerful communication tools. “Just like you have a team meeting at work, you need a team meeting in your relationship,” he advises. During these meetings, couples discuss logistics, emotions, and what’s working — and what’s not.
Zach teaches a structured emotional check-in using the Connection Codes Core Emotion Wheel. It includes emotions like anger, shame, fear, and guilt. “It’s like brushing your teeth for your amygdala,” he says. Naming these emotions helps couples empathize with each other. They help to reduce defensiveness and increase emotional safety.
Zach’s work heavily features Eve Rodsky’s Fair Play system — a deck of 100 cards, each representing a household task. “I get guys to figure out which cards they own 51% of,” he explains. This method helps eliminate guesswork. It ensures that responsibilities are clearly defined and fairly distributed.
Zach shares, “If your partner still reminds you to take the trash out, then you don’t own that task yet.” By fully taking ownership. From conception to completion — partners can prevent emotional burnout and eliminate hidden resentments.
Zach emphasizes that being emotionally literate isn’t a weakness — it’s leadership. “I used to post ego-driven videos like, ‘Look at me, I’m such a good dad,’ but it wasn’t helping anyone,” he says. “Once I started sharing where I messed up, men started listening — and women started sharing those videos with their partners.”
When partners lead with emotions like fear and guilt rather than blame, they invite dialogue instead of defensiveness. “People aren’t upset out of nowhere,” Zach explains. “They’re upset because they’re committed to being seen, to being respected. Acknowledging that commitment is how we build empathy.”
Zach Watson presents a practical roadmap for reevaluating gender roles in contemporary relationships. Couples can transform resentment into connection and conflict into collaboration. They can do so through emotional literacy, structured communication, and equity-based task division. His message is clear: it’s not about perfection, but about being willing to learn, adapt, and grow together.
