Why “Nice Guys” Struggle in Love: Relationship Advice w/ Marc Azoulay

May 1, 2025

On a recent solo episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay brings a fresh perspective to an age-old dilemma. Why being a “nice guy” often fails in love and relationships. Marc describes himself as a “recovering nice guy”. He uses his clinical expertise and personal experiences to explain the complex emotional traps that many men fall into. Especially when trying to win affection through passivity and people-pleasing.

“Nice Guy Syndrome is essentially the male form of people-pleasing,” Marc explains. “It’s the belief that if you give people everything they want, they’ll reward you with love, success, or approval.” He dives deep into the emotional costs of this approach. Marc shows how it disconnects men from their true selves. It undermines their masculine energy and ultimately sabotages their romantic lives.

Marc introduces listeners to the subtle but crucial ways men can shift from being passive to being authentic. He focuses on being confident and connected. He offers transformative relationship advice that men in their 20s to 50s can immediately put into action.

The Problem with Passive Men: Why Decisiveness Matters

Marc stresses that one of the biggest issues women have with “nice guys” is passivity. “Nice guys often say, ‘Whatever you want, honey,’” he shares. “But what women want is a man with opinions, preferences, and the courage to express them.”

Passive men leave their partners feeling unseen and unsupported. This creates emotional distance rather than true intimacy. Marc recommends practicing small, daily acts of decisiveness. Such as choosing a restaurant or suggesting a date activity. This begins building this crucial skill.

Seeking Validation Instead of Building a True Connection

Another key insight Marc offers is that nice guys often chase validation, not a real connection in relationships. “When a nice guy is being overly accommodating, what he’s doing is begging for approval,” Marc explains.

True connection, Marc argues, requires vulnerability and emotional risk. “The best definition of vulnerability,” he says, “is starting a conversation you don’t know how it’s going to end.” For lasting love, men must move beyond surface-level pleasantries. They must allow their real feelings, even the uncomfortable ones, to be seen.

Importance of Sexual Polarity and Embracing Masculine Energy

Marc introduces the concept of sexual polarity. It is the magnetic tension between masculine and feminine energies. It fuels romantic attraction. “Without polarity, there’s no spark,” he says.

He emphasizes that masculine energy isn’t about dominance or aggression. But it is about initiation, direction, and confidence. “Nice guys often suppress their sexuality out of fear of being seen as a predator,” Marc notes. Reclaiming this healthy, assertive energy is critical for maintaining passion and excitement in relationships.

Why Conflict Creates Connection

Contrary to what many “nice guys” believe, conflict isn’t something to avoid — it’s a gateway to deeper intimacy. Marc highlights, “Women crave connection, and one of the best ways to build it is through honest conflict.”

Men should avoid shutting down or giving in too quickly during disagreements. Instead, they should aim for honest conversation and mutual compromise. Tackling tough conversations with honesty and emotional presence not only resolves issues. But it also strengthens the relationship bond.

Purpose, Mission, and Building Confidence

Marc also discusses the importance of having a personal mission or purpose. Without one, men often become passive and aimless — traits that can erode respect in a romantic partnership.

Quoting the influential book The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida, Marc describes how a man on a mission naturally commands admiration. “Women respect a man who fights for something greater than himself,” he explains. Finding a passionate pursuit isn’t just about career ambition. It’s about cultivating a sense of building confidence and self-respect.

Dropping the Covert Contracts: Expectation vs. Authenticity

One of the more subtle yet toxic behaviors is the creation of covert contracts. These are the unspoken agreements. “If I do X for you, you’ll reward me with Y.” He warns, “Women don’t know they’re playing this game, and when they inevitably break the contract, resentment builds.”

Healthy relationships thrive when both partners express their needs clearly and without manipulation. Dropping covert contracts means stepping into a more honest, adult way of relating.

Conclusion

Marc Azoulay’s relationship advice on this episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast is clear: to truly connect with women and build fulfilling relationships, men must abandon the Nice Guy Syndrome. By embracing decisiveness, vulnerability, sexual polarity, and purpose, men can stop being passive spectators in their own lives and start leading with authenticity and confidence. As Marc reminds his listeners, “Women want all of you, not just the pleasant parts. The more you show your true self, the deeper your relationships can grow.”
