Relationship advice from the man who rewired couples therapy: a conversation with Dr. Stan Tatkin

Relationship advice from the man who rewired couples therapy: a conversation with Dr. Stan Tatkin

May 13, 2026

Most men don’t struggle in relationships because they don’t care. They struggle because nobody ever taught them how relationships actually work, at a neurological, psychological, and structural level. And by the time most couples realize something is badly wrong, the damage’s been quietly building for years.

In this episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, Marc Azoulay sits down with Dr. Stan Tatkin, clinical psychologist, researcher, developer of the psychobiological approach to couple’s therapy (PACT), and author of the bestselling book Wired for Love — for a frank, science-backed conversation about what it really takes to build a healthy relationship. Dr. Tatkin doesn’t deal in platitudes. He brings evolutionary biology, hard neuroscience, and some uncomfortable truths about what human beings are actually like, and what genuine relationship advice looks like when it takes all of that seriously.

Marc draws on what he hears from the men he works with, men who feel reduced to a paycheck, disconnected from their partners, unsure how to fix a relationship that has slowly hollowed out, and asks Dr. Tatkin directly what to do about it. The answers are practical, grounded, and unlike anything most couples counseling has ever told them.

The episode covers:

“We see couple work as more like training for a sport, a two-person system, a team that has to work under increasing stress while remaining collaborative and cooperative.”

If that framing sounds unfamiliar, that’s the point. Healthy relationships, in Dr. Tatkin’s view, aren’t the result of compatibility or chemistry. They’re built, deliberately, by two people who decide to design something together and hold each other to it. For men who want to know how to be a better partner but aren’t sure where to start, this episode gives you the framework.

Who is this episode for?

This episode is for men who are dealing with relationship problems, whether things have already broken down or whether they can feel the distance quietly growing. If you’ve wondered whether couples counseling is worth it, or what it looks like when it’s done right, Dr. Tatkin’s approach will give you a clear answer.

What is the psychobiological approach to couple’s therapy?

PACT is a method developed by Stan Tatkin that combines neuroscience, attachment theory, and the autonomic nervous system to understand how couples actually function under stress. Rather than listening to what people say, PACT therapists watch what they do, reading body language, micro-expressions, and nervous system responses to get at what’s really happening. Sessions are video-recorded, couples sit on rolling chairs, and exercises are designed to deliberately stress the partnership to see how both people perform as a team when it’s hard.

What does emotional safety mean in a relationship?

Emotional safety means both partners can be honest and imperfect without fear of punishment or humiliation. Dr. Tatkin treats it as a structural requirement, not a feeling, something that has to be built by explicit agreement. Without it, the threat system gets triggered repeatedly, and the accumulation of unresolved threat responses is one of the primary drivers of relationship dissolution. Emotional intimacy and physical intimacy both depend on that foundation being solid.

How can I be a better partner?

Dr. Tatkin’s answer: stop operating on assumption and start designing. Most men who feel unseen and reduced, as Marc puts it, to a paycheck and a taxi driver, are living inside a relationship that was never consciously built. His relationship advice is to sit down with your partner and define who you are to each other, what you’re building, and what you’re both committed to.

How do you fix a relationship?

You change the architecture. Most couples in trouble aren’t failing because they’re incompatible, they’re failing because they never defined what they were building together. Dr. Tatkin’s approach to how to fix a relationship starts with creating a shared purpose, real agreements, and a governance system both people actually choose. Couples therapy grounded in this model gives you a structure to rebuild on, not just someone to talk at.

Male brain vs. female brain: are men and women actually different?

Dr. Tatkin speaks honestly about the difference between men and women’s neurological wiring. His position is measured: yes, there are structural differences, but they are often as much a product of how boys and girls are socialized as they are of biology. Women’s brains, on average, tend to show more integration between the left and right hemispheres and are generally stronger at relational processing. Men’s arousal systems tend to activate faster and stay elevated longer. Men are also more likely to be alexithymic, meaning they have difficulty identifying and naming their own emotions, often collapsing a wide emotional range into a single word like “annoyed.”

But rather than using these differences as excuses or battle lines, Dr. Tatkin is framing them as a partnership advantage. His own marriage, he explains, works precisely because he and his wife think differently. She is linear; he is circular. She executes; he creates. Together, they form a more complete system than either could be alone. “She is my other brain.”

Where can I find Dr. Stan Tatkin and his book Wired for Love?

You can find Dr. Tatkin at his Website. His book Wired for Love is widely available and is a strong starting point. He and his wife also run couples workshops, the Win-Win Couple video program, and an annual couples retreat — this year on the Mekong Delta, with visits to Vietnam and Cambodia.
