Beyond the Boredom Epidemic: How Men Can Rebuild Purpose and Meaning

October 29, 2025

In today’s fast-paced, hyperconnected world, more men are quietly struggling with a deep sense of emptiness. They wake up, go to work, scroll through their phones, and repeat the cycle, day after day, without any real sense of purpose or meaning. “A lot of men say that they’re stressed out or overworked,” says Marc. “But when I really listen to their stories, I see that they’re bored, existentially bored. They’re not just tired; they’re starved for meaning.”

Marc describes this as a boredom epidemic as a silent crisis that’s eroding men’s motivation, relationships, and sense of self. Beneath the surface of this modern masculinity dilemma lies something more profound: a hunger for depth and direction. In his words, “We’re talking about chronic existential boredom, cold boredom. It’s a lack of feeling, a lack of meaning, a sense that nothing matters.”

Through this conversation, Marc unpacks the root causes of this masculinity crisis and provides practical steps for men to reclaim their energy, rediscover purpose and meaning, and build more real connections in their lives.

The Hidden Crisis of Modern Masculinity

Modern men are facing what Marc calls an “epidemic of lost men.” Despite achieving success, many feel numb. They feel emotionally detached and disconnected from their own desires. “You might have the house, the job, the family, but still feel like none of it matters,” Marc explains. “That’s the tragedy of modern masculinity. We’ve traded passion for stability, play for productivity.”

He links much of this emptiness to our dependence on external validation and quick dopamine fixes. “Our society runs on dopamine addiction. Every time you scroll, drink, or buy something, your brain gets that ‘mission accomplished’ signal. But the more we rely on these external hits, the less our brains produce naturally.” Over time, this cycle leads to what Marc calls “dopamine burnout”. It is a state where nothing feels exciting unless it’s extreme.

The Psychology of Emptiness

Marc draws on principles of existentialism and Buddhist thought to explain the emotional landscape of many men today. He distinguishes between “hot boredom” (the restless search for stimulation) and “cold boredom” (a deeper form of numbness and disconnection). The latter, he says, can turn into despair if left unaddressed.

“What’s underneath the emptiness,” Marc continues, “are often unprocessed traumas, grief, shame, or regret that haven’t been integrated.” In therapy, he helps men “make sense of the past, feel the feelings, and create meaning out of what’s happened.” Processing these buried emotions, he emphasizes, is the key to breaking free from the loop of avoidance and dopamine addiction.

Healing Through the Inner Child and Real Connections

To rediscover purpose and meaning, Marc encourages men to reconnect with their inner child. The playful, curious part of themselves that once found joy in life’s simplest moments. “You can rebuild your sense of self by revisiting what you loved as a kid,” he says. “Take up a hobby you abandoned. Learn something new. Do it not for success, but for fulfilment.”

He also underscores the importance of real connections over digital ones. “Parasocial relationships are the one-way connections with influencers or streamers. They trick your brain into thinking you’re bonded, but they’re not real. Real-world relationships are messy, awkward, and beautiful. That’s where meaning lives.”

Marc’s advice is simple yet profound: engage in real conversations, join communities, volunteer, or just spend more time with loved ones. It’s through authentic connection, he says, that men can rebuild their sense of belonging.

From Dopamine Detox to Purpose Rebuilding

Marc doesn’t advocate for quick fixes like a “dopamine detox.” Instead, he invites men to cultivate long-term transformation by identifying a mission that feels deeply personal. “You don’t need another dopamine hit. You need a reason to wake up,” he insists.

Purpose, according to Marc, isn’t discovered; it’s built. “It’s forged through trial and error, through living by your values and taking responsibility for your growth.” He shares that this process is central to The Modern Man Playbook, a resource that helps men clarify their ethics, vision, and identity.

“Start small,” Marc concludes. “Your purpose doesn’t have to be heroic. It could be being a great dad, a kind partner, or a man who lives with integrity. What matters is that it’s real. And that it’s yours.”

Conclusion

The epidemic of lost men isn’t about weakness; it’s about disconnection. Marc’s message is a call to action for men to slow down, reflect, and rebuild their lives around purpose and meaning. Men can move from mere survival to genuine fulfilment. They can do so by confronting emptiness, healing unprocessed trauma, and nurturing their inner child. As Marc reminds his listeners, “You don’t need to escape life. You need to engage with it. Purpose is not out there waiting; it’s something you’re creating every day.”
