Midlife Crisis or Bullsh*t Label? What Men Are Really Going Through

September 1, 2025

In this special roundtable episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay is sitting down with three leading voices in men’s mental health. Dr. Tamra Sattler is a therapist working with couples and men in Boulder. Jack Lambert is a licensed mental health counselor in New York City. And Dr. John King is a trauma expert and speaker.

Together, they are unpacking what it really means to go through a midlife crisis. It is a term often misunderstood and oversimplified.

“Midlife spans so long, you know, 35 to 70. It can meet us at any point,” explains Dr. Sattler. “For many of my clients, it feels like a dark night of the soul. Something shakes you to your core, and you just can’t ignore it anymore.”

Jack Lambert echoes this by describing the midlife experience as less of a cliché and more of a psychological reckoning. He says, “We may just be looking at an adjustment disorder surrounding age or stage of life concerns. The stereotypical sports car or affair? Those are symptoms. The deeper reality often looks like depression or anxiety.”

For Dr. John King, the midlife crisis is not collapse, it is alignment. “Most of our lives, we live from the outside in. Midlife is when you are forced to live from the inside out. Authenticity becomes the only path forward.”

Midlife Crisis as a Turning Point

The conversation challenges the cultural narrative that paints men in midlife as reckless or indulgent. Instead, the experts are reframing it as a turning point toward authentic masculinity and deeper self-awareness.

According to Dr. King, this stage is about integrity: “Anything that does not fit within an authentic structure is now called into question. Be it relationships, business, or even hobbies. The crisis is not a breakdown. It is the invitation to align who you are with how you live.”

For many men, this shift is painful because it disrupts years of conditioning. “A lot of my clients are high achievers,” Dr. Sattler shares. “They come in saying, ‘I don’t feel right. Success isn’t fulfilling me anymore.’ It’s a big shake-up.”

The Role of Childhood Trauma and Identity Crisis

A recurring theme in the discussion is how childhood trauma and unresolved wounds resurface in midlife. Dr. King reflects on his own experience of abuse and survival: “When you grow up fighting for survival, authenticity gets ruptured. At 45, I had to decide whether I could like the man I had become. That’s when healing truly began.”

Jack Lambert adds that many men carry suppressed identities into adulthood. He says, “I’ve worked with clients who came out as gay later in life, or who lived decades hiding depression behind anger. Midlife can feel like identity crisis 2.0. It’s not just who you are now, but reclaiming the parts you left behind.”

Loneliness and the Search for Connection

Beyond internal struggles, loneliness emerges as one of the most pressing issues for men in midlife. “Where are the male friends? Where is the support?” asks Dr. Sattler. “So many men come to me saying they have no one else to talk to.”

Dr. King emphasizes that men connect best through shared activities: “Men do things side by side. It doesn’t matter if it’s fishing, building, or walking. That’s where real conversations happen. When those spaces disappear, men feel isolated.”

Spiritual Practices and Finding Purpose

One of the most powerful ways men navigate midlife is through spiritual practices and reflection. Dr. Sattler often guides clients in journaling and sharing their life narratives. Jack Lambert encourages men to ask: What does my most authentic self want right now? What am I afraid to ask for?

For Dr. King, midlife is about legacy. “As boys, it’s about consuming. As men, it’s about providing and as elders, it’s about preparing others. Legacy is not just money. It’s the wisdom and stories you leave behind.”

From Manhood to Elderhood

The experts agree that manhood evolves in stages. Midlife is not the end but a bridge into elderhood. It is a role of guidance, mentorship, and purpose. “There’s permission to live the life you want, finally,” says Dr. Sattler. “It’s almost like you get a permission slip in your 50s and 60s.”

Dr. King frames it as stepping into kingship: “You move from protecting just yourself or your family to shepherding the community. The midlife crisis is the test that prepares you for that.”

Conclusion

The midlife crisis is not a downfall; it is a call to authenticity. For men, it means confronting the masks of success and healing old wounds. It also focuses on embracing spiritual practices and redefining male identity for the next stage of life. The experts agree on one thing: you don’t have to do it alone. Therapy, men’s groups, and trusted guides are essential. As Dr. Sattler concludes, “You owe it to yourself. This is your life. Live it fully.”
