Mastering Emotional Regulation: A Neuroscientist’s Guide to Manhood w/ Carlos Davidovich

October 23, 2025

In this compelling conversation, The Men’s Therapy Podcast host Marc Azoulay welcomes Carlos Davidovich. He is a neuroscientist and executive coach known for bridging neuroscience and personal growth. Carlos has decades of experience coaching leaders across Europe and the Americas. He brings a fresh perspective to modern masculinity. One rooted in understanding the brain, balancing energies, and embracing emotional regulation.

“When we talk about masculinity today,” Carlos explains, “we need to understand that every human brain has both a masculine and a feminine side. The key is to balance the two.” His approach is grounded not in cultural stereotypes, but in biology and emotional intelligence. Carlos discusses how both men and women possess a spectrum of emotional and cognitive strengths. And that integration, rather than opposition, is the pathway to authentic manhood.

Drawing on his expertise in neuroscience and behaviour change, he emphasizes that true growth begins with self-awareness. “We can’t deny that we have both sides. It’s not about which one is better. It’s about understanding that both are needed.” For men seeking to grow emotionally, Carlos’s insights offer a scientific yet soulful roadmap to becoming more adaptable, mindful, and grounded.

Emotional Regulation Through Neuroscience

Emotional regulation is the ability to understand, manage, and express emotions. It sits at the core of Carlos’s philosophy. He connects this directly to neuroscience, explaining how our brains are wired to respond to fear, stress, and uncertainty. “When fear takes over,” he says, “it activates the reptilian brain, the part responsible for survival. But growth happens when we move from fear-based reactions to the emotional and rational parts of the brain.”

This, he argues, is where emotional intelligence plays a transformative role. Learning to recognize our emotions without being controlled by them is key to personal growth. For men, this means developing the capacity to feel, not suppress, anger, sadness, and vulnerability. “You cannot avoid emotions,” Carlos notes. “But you can learn how to express them with awareness and sensitivity.”

He stresses that emotional regulation is not about staying calm at all times but about finding balance. “It’s like a pendulum,” he explains. “Our emotions swing from one side to the other. The goal isn’t to stay in the centre all the time, that’s not human. The goal is to return to balance when life pulls you off course.”

Balancing Masculine and Feminine Energy

Carlos challenges the traditional notions of manhood that prioritize stoicism and control. Instead, he calls for an integration of what he terms the “male and female brain.” In his words, “Sensitivity, compassion, and deep listening are just as important as decisiveness and strength. These qualities are often labelled as feminine. Both exist in the same brain.”

This concept reframes masculine energy as dynamic rather than rigid. It is something that can evolve through openness and curiosity. For men who were taught that “men don’t cry,” Carlos’s neuroscience-backed insights provide both validation and practical hope. “We were never trained to access our emotions,” he reflects. “But emotional expression is not weakness. It’s human.”

He also highlights the danger of competition between the masculine and feminine. “The issue is not difference, it’s power,” he says. “We need each other. Integration is the way forward.”

Mentorship, Flexibility, and the Power of Growth

Another crucial aspect of Carlos’s message is the role of mentorship and intergenerational learning. He believes older men can offer wisdom about adaptability to younger generations. It’s called the Adaptability Quotient (AQ). It can help them navigate a fast-changing world. “We were born in a completely different time,” he reflects. “But the most valuable thing we can share now is mental flexibility.”

For Carlos, behaviour change is rooted in self-awareness and community. He encourages men to look for mentors who embody openness, empathy, and balance, not just external success. “Stop choosing the wrong role models,” he urges. “Look for those who make you feel complete, not those who make you feel inferior.”

He also challenges the cultural myth that men must carry every burden alone. “You don’t need to solve everything yourself,” he says. “If you can’t manage it, ask for help. That’s not weakness, that’s wisdom.”

From Fear to Fulfilment: Redefining Manhood

Throughout the discussion, Carlos brings attention to how fear dominates the modern male psyche. Such as fear of failure, rejection, or vulnerability. “Many men live in fear without realizing it,” he says. “But fear only keeps us rigid. Flexibility keeps us alive.”

Redefining manhood means moving away from control and toward connection, with ourselves, with others, and with our emotions. “Stop expecting everyone to be like you,” he concludes. “Differences are gifts. The more we accept them, the stronger we become.”

This philosophy ties together neuroscience, emotional intelligence, and mentorship into a cohesive model for personal growth. One that empowers men to build healthier relationships, stronger communities, and a deeper sense of self.
