Masculine energy in relationships: GS Youngblood on the masculine blueprint

May 18, 2026

Masculine energy in relationships is something most men have never been properly taught. They’ve been handed two versions, one that’s domineering and one that’s completely hollowed out. Neither works. The first drives his partner away. The second bores her. What actually works is something most men have never been taught: how to embody masculine energy in a way that is grounded, leading, and genuinely connective.

That’s what this episode is about.

In this episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, Marc Azoulay talks with GS Youngblood, men’s coach, relationship expert, and author of The Masculine in Relationship, about what positive masculinity looks like inside a real partnership and why so many men are getting it wrong without realizing it.

GS built his Masculine Blueprint after his own marriage fell apart. What he found was that the failure wasn’t about being a bad person. It was about not being grounded, not leading, and not knowing how to build real emotional connection with his partner. His framework is the answer he wishes he had then.

The blueprint has three pillars:

GS and Marc also get into nice guy syndrome, polarity in relationships, nervous system regulation, sexual leadership, and what emotional leadership actually looks like the morning after a fight. This isn’t theory. It’s a practical, honest conversation about what it takes to be the man a relationship needs.

Who is this episode for?

This episode is for men who feel reactive when they want to be steady, passive when they want to lead, and disconnected when they want real intimacy. If you’ve ever wondered what masculine energy in relationships is actually supposed to feel like, and how to get there, this conversation will hit home.

What is the Masculine Blueprint?

The Masculine Blueprint is GS Youngblood’s three-part framework for how men can embody their masculine energy in relationship: respond vs react (get grounded), provide structure (lead more), and create safety (build emotional connection). His argument is simple: do all three, and you will be living more from your masculine and your relationship will improve.

What does respond vs react mean in a relationship?

It means staying present and grounded when your partner is emotional, rather than going defensive or trying to fix her feelings immediately. GS says a woman’s disappointment or anger is “kryptonite” for most men, it triggers reactivity because it feels like an attack on their identity. Nervous system regulation through daily embodiment practices, like a conscious breathing exercise GS teaches, is what builds the capacity to pause, witness yourself, and choose how to respond instead of firing back.

How does nice guy syndrome affect relationships?

Nice guy syndrome drives depolarization. When a man constantly defers — “whatever you want, honey” — he thinks he’s being kind, but he’s actually burdening his partner with all the decision-making and erasing himself as a presence. GS says women don’t want that. They want a man who shows up with a point of view, leads with clarity, and invites input. Abdicating leadership doesn’t make her feel cared for. It makes her feel alone.

What is the difference between masculine leadership and control?

GS keeps it simple: control is “here’s what we’re doing.” Leadership is “here’s what I think we should do, how does that land for you?” The formula is clarity plus inclusion. A man figures out what he actually thinks, needs, and wants — then brings that to his partner and invites her in. He never shows up empty-handed to a decision. That’s the line.

What is polarity in relationships and why does it matter?

Polarity in relationships is the energetic tension between masculine vs feminine energy that creates attraction and aliveness in a partnership. GS describes the masculine as the riverbank and the feminine as the flowing water — both are needed. When men abdicate leadership and women are forced to step into that vacuum, both partners move toward the same energy and the polarity collapses. The relationship becomes functional but flat.

What does emotional leadership and emotional connection look like in a relationship?

Emotional leadership is walking back into the burning building. After a fight that didn’t fully resolve, a grounded man does not pretend it never happened – he checks in the next morning, stays in the conversation, and sees it through. That’s what builds emotional safety in relationships. Emotional connection follows when a man shares what’s actually going on inside him, not unloading it on his partner, but letting her feel that he’s present and that he has it handled. She doesn’t want suppression. She wants to feel her man feeling her.

What is the first step for a man who wants to start this work?

Go back and repair something. GS says most men want to sweep the past under the rug and move forward, but the past is always impinging on the present. Find a moment where you weren’t fully relational, where you dismissed something she tried to share, where you checked out. Acknowledge it, acknowledge the impact on her, and let her feel that you actually feel the weight of it. That’s what begins to thaw what has been frozen.
