Midlife is often framed as a crisis, but is it really? In this roundtable episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay is guiding the conversation toward a deeper and more accurate question. What happens when a man’s identity no longer fits the life he has built?
Joining the discussion are Shana James and Silvan Summers. Shana is a relationship and intimacy coach known for her work on love and sex after 40. Silvan is a somatic psychotherapist and therapeutic coach at Men’s Therapy Online. Together, they examine the midlife crisis. It is less about impulsive decisions and more about a profound reckoning with emotional truth and meaning.
Shana is describing midlife as a moment when “most of our dreams and fantasies have shattered”. But at the same time, it’s an opportunity to create incredible love and sex beyond anything we could create when we’re younger. She is emphasizing that identity is shifting, from who men were taught to be to who they actually are.
Silvan is approaching the topic through the body. “We experience emotion through sensation,” he explains. “If we don’t understand what’s happening in the body, we lose control over where our emotional life goes.” For many men, this disconnection shows up as numbness, emotional shutdown, and a growing sense of feeling lost.
Marc frames the discussion by naming what many men quietly experience: success on paper, but confusion internally. Careers, marriages, and responsibilities remain intact, yet something essential feels missing. This episode is examining that missing piece, not as failure, but as initiation.
Rather than viewing midlife crisis as a breakdown, the conversation reframes it as a confrontation with identity. Silvan notes that many men reach midlife having followed prescribed paths, only to realize they have lost touch with what actually matters. “We get into habits and routines,” Silvan explains. “We start maintaining the house, the job, the mortgage, and suddenly we’re numb.”
This numbness is not accidental. It is often the result of years of emotional suppression. Men are taught to perform, provide, and endure. By midlife, the cost of that conditioning becomes impossible to ignore.
Shana adds that midlife often arrives with anxiety, depression, or a dull emotional flatness. “I couldn’t find joy,” she shares. “I was doing the things I loved, but none of it was hitting anymore.” That absence of joy is not a personal failure. It is a signal that identity is evolving.
Emotional numbness is one of the most common signs of a midlife crisis in men. Silvan is clear about where it comes from. “We’re taught not to feel,” he says. “And that’s not sustainable.”
When vulnerability is avoided, it does not disappear. It resurfaces through alcohol use, affairs, overwork, or emotional withdrawal. Marc observes that many men delay seeking help until marriage struggles or relationship breakdowns force the issue.
Shana highlights how vulnerability becomes the turning point. “Misery is sometimes easier than uncertainty,” she says. “But at some point, that changes.” The willingness to feel, to sit with discomfort rather than escape it, is what allows identity to reorganize in healthier ways.
As identity shifts, relationship struggles often follow. Many men attempt to preserve stability without addressing emotional intimacy. Shana emphasizes that this is where many marriages stall.
“Sex later in life isn’t about performance,” she explains. “It’s about attunement, presence, and slowing down.” Sex in midlife becomes a reflection of emotional availability, not conquest.
Marc adds that unresolved identity issues often show up in the bedroom. Men who rely on adolescent models of masculinity, like control, dominance, and achievement, struggle to maintain connection. Love and sex in midlife require mutual awareness, curiosity, and care.
Throughout the episode, midlife is framed as an initiation. It is a psychological and emotional threshold. Silvan references Erik Erikson’s stage of generativity versus stagnation, where men must decide whether their lives are contributing meaningfully or simply maintaining momentum. “If you numb out now,” Silvan warns, “it catches up later as despair.”
Shana reinforces this by naming the freedom on the other side of initiation. “What if there’s nothing left to prove?” she asks. When identity no longer depends on validation, men gain access to depth, purpose, and connection.
This Men’s Therapy Podcast episode makes one thing clear: a midlife crisis is not about losing control. It is about reclaiming identity. Emotional intimacy, vulnerability, and conscious relationships are not signs of weakness; they are markers of maturity.
As Marc guides the conversation, the message remains grounded and hopeful. When men stop running from feeling lost and start listening to what that feeling is pointing toward, midlife becomes a doorway, not an ending.
