In a recent episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay welcomes Dr. Robert Lufkin. He is a physician, researcher, and author of “The Lies I Taught in Medical School”. He has decades of experience teaching at UCLA and USC. Dr. Lufkin shares a transformative message about how lifestyle changes are reversing chronic diseases.
Dr. Lufkin describes how his journey begins not as a medical crusader, but as a patient. “I was minding my own business as a professor when I came down with four chronic diseases,” he recalls. When conventional doctors prescribed pills with no real solutions, he begins asking deeper questions: “What about lifestyle? What about nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress?” His quest for answers leads him to reverse all four conditions through lifestyle medicine. This inspires his mission to share these insights with others.
While Dr. Lufkin acknowledges the life-saving role of Western medicine in emergencies, he highlights its shortcomings with long-term conditions. “If I get hit by a car today, I want a blood transfusion and surgery. But for chronic diseases, pills and surgeries often treat symptoms without addressing the root cause.”
This gap leaves millions of men facing obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even mental illness without lasting relief. According to Dr. Lufkin, these conditions share common roots in poor metabolic health and can often be improved through preventive lifestyle strategies.
For Dr. Lufkin, lifestyle medicine becomes the most powerful tool for longevity. He identifies four pillars: nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management. “Doctors just make me less sick. If I want to be healthy, that boils down to lifestyle, and that’s something only I can do,” he explains.
He emphasizes the power of lifestyle changes over quick fixes: “Taking a pill is easy, but it doesn’t transform who we are. Lifestyle does.” By addressing root causes rather than masking symptoms, men can extend not only their lifespan but also their health span.
Nutrition is at the centre of Dr. Lufkin’s recommendations. He explains how the rise of processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, and seed oils in the 1980s has fueled today’s chronic disease epidemic. “Almost 90% of Americans show at least one metabolic abnormality,” he notes.
He advocates for cutting back on carbohydrates, eliminating seed oils, and considering strategies like intermittent fasting. These prevention lifestyle adjustments reduce inflammation and improve metabolic health, laying a foundation for holistic health.
Beyond physical health, Dr. Lufkin stresses the importance of mental resilience. “Stress isn’t what happens to us. It’s the meaning we place on it,” he explains. Chronic stress fuels inflammation and accelerates disease. Practices such as meditation, therapy, and mindfulness strengthen the mindset and lower the risk.
He also discusses emerging therapies, from psychedelics to ketogenic diets for mental illness, which show promise in reshaping the brain and improving overall well-being.
The gut microbiome is another area influencing both physical and mental health. Dr. Lufkin points out that disruptions, from antibiotics to everyday mouthwash, can damage beneficial bacteria critical to metabolic balance. “We are living with another organism inside us. Protecting it is key to long-term health.” Supporting gut health with fermented foods, probiotics, and fibre-rich diets becomes a cornerstone of lifestyle medicine.
When it comes to exercise, Dr. Lufkin champions strength training as essential for men’s longevity. “One of the most powerful longevity strategies is building muscle,” he says. Resistance training not only preserves testosterone levels but also improves insulin resistance and prevents age-related decline. Combined with cardio and active living, strength training helps men maintain vitality well into later years.
Dr. Robert Lufkin’s story is a call to action. His experience shows that chronic diseases do not have to define men’s futures. Through lifestyle changes, focusing on nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress, and gut health, men can reclaim control of their health, extend their longevity, and live fuller, more resilient lives. As Dr. Lufkin reminds us: “Lifestyle is the most powerful medicine most of us will ever experience.”
Dr. Robert Lufkin is a physician, researcher, and professor at UCLA and USC. He is the author of “The Lies I Taught in Medical School”, where he critically examines Western medicine’s limitations and highlights lifestyle medicine as a path toward longevity and health.
His personal journey of reversing chronic diseases through lifestyle changes has fueled his mission to educate others about the importance of adopting healthy habits. Today, he speaks and writes widely on metabolic health, prevention lifestyle strategies, and holistic health, inspiring audiences to embrace longevity-focused living.
