The Identity Trap – How Workaholism Is Burning Men Out

The Identity Trap – How Workaholism Is Burning Men Out

December 25, 2025

Marc Azoulay unpacks a pattern he is seeing repeatedly in high-performing men. Success is increasing, but fulfilment is disappearing. Speaking from over a decade of clinical experience, Marc explains how many men are not actually chasing success. They are running from shame.

“You think making more money will finally make you feel secure,” Marc explains, “but every time you level up, you feel worse.” He describes men whose bank accounts are growing, yet whose inner lives feel hollow. Rather than feeling proud of achievement, they are experiencing numbness, burnout, and an ongoing identity crisis.

Marc notices that self-worth is becoming dangerously entangled with productivity, income, and performance. In a capitalist culture that rewards output above all else. Men are being conditioned to equate value with work. “There’s no upper limit,” he says. “You can always do more, produce more, make more money. And there’s never a moment of enoughness.”

This episode focuses on how external validation quietly replaces identity, creating what Marc calls an “achievement addiction.” Promotions, praise, and financial wins temporarily soothe anxiety. They never resolve the deeper fear of failure or unlovability. Over time, this leads to workaholism, emotional disconnection, and eventually burnout.

Marc is guiding listeners through the invisible beliefs driving this cycle, while also offering practical ways to rebuild identity beyond career, income, and constant performance.

When Identity Becomes the Job

Marc is explaining that one of the earliest warning signs is when identity fuses completely with work. “If you can’t talk about anything other than your job,” he says, “that role has become who you are.”

Men who have invested years in their careers are especially vulnerable. Long hours, sacrificed relationships, neglected health, and geographic moves all reinforce what psychology calls the sunk cost fallacy. The more a man gives to his career, the harder it becomes to imagine himself outside of it. When work falters through layoffs, missed promotions, or perceived failure, identity collapses with it.

Success and Shame: The Hidden Motivator

At the core of this cycle, Marc is identifying shame as the real driver. “It’s not ambition,” he explains. “It’s fear. Fear of disappointing people, fear of being exposed, fear of being seen as the weakest link.”

Many men are growing up learning that love follows achievement. Good grades earn praise. Performance earns approval. Over time, success and shame become inseparable. When praise disappears, self-worth disappears with it. This creates an achievement addiction, where external validation becomes emotional oxygen. And without it, men feel anxious, empty, or depressed.

Capitalist Conditioning and Workaholism

Marc is placing this issue in a broader cultural context. In a capitalist system that rewards constant output, men are being praised for suffering. Long hours, exhaustion, and self-sacrifice are worn as badges of honour. “There’s pride in being the guy who works the hardest,” Marc says, “but it becomes a problem when you can’t turn it off.”

Workaholism becomes socially acceptable, even celebrated, while emotional health quietly deteriorates. Rest feels unsafe. Slowing down feels like failure. And without work, many men are unsure who they even are.

Breaking the Cycle: Rebuilding Identity

Healing begins with identifying the core belief driving behaviour. Common beliefs include: I’m only lovable if I provide, I can’t disappoint people, or my value comes from suffering.

Once identified, these beliefs must be tested, not intellectually, but emotionally. Marc encourages small risks: saying no to overtime, asking for help, allowing others to contribute, or letting rest be productive.

As work stops occupying 100% of identity, a void often appears. And depression frequently follows. Marc emphasizes that this is not regression, but opportunity. “You’re finally making space for something new.” Fitness, hobbies, relationships, spirituality, therapy, and men’s groups are all presented as ways to diversify identity and build resilience beyond work.

Conclusion

Marc is reminding listeners that they are not broken; they are conditioned. Identity rooted solely in performance is fragile, but it is also changeable. By naming shame, challenging old beliefs, and intentionally building a fuller life, men are learning to experience success without losing themselves in the process.
