How Consistency Beats Intensity: Fitness Without a Gym w/ Marc Azoulay

May 31, 2025

For many men, the idea of spending hours at the gym isn’t just unappealing—it’s unworkable. Whether it’s due to time, money, or simply a lack of motivation, the traditional fitness model doesn’t fit everyone’s lifestyle. Marc Azoulay is a psychotherapist and host of the Men’s Therapy Podcast. He shares practical insights into how men can build strength. He teaches how to reclaim their health and take control of their lives—all from the comfort of their homes.

“I’ve worked with hundreds of men who hate the gym,” Azoulay explains. “That’s not a problem. You don’t need to bench press 200 pounds to build discipline, testosterone, and a body you’re proud of.”

This episode is especially geared toward dads. They may be sacrificing their well-being for their families, unintentionally sidelining their health. “Maybe the commute is too long. Maybe you’re prioritizing your family over yourself, which is problematic in some ways, but understandable.”

What emerges is a powerful message rooted in one key principle: consistency. Azoulay emphasizes that building habits, not chasing motivation, is what leads to lasting change. As he says, “Action creates motivation—not the other way around.”

Why Consistency Beats Intensity

The foundation of a successful fitness journey, especially without a gym, lies in consistency. Azoulay references a study from Frontiers in Psychology (2016). He emphasizes that “habits—not mood—are the strongest predictors of long-term fitness adherence.”

Men often believe that motivation is the spark they need to get started. But as Azoulay explains, that belief is misplaced. “Most people don’t like exercising, especially in the beginning. If you’re coming from a sedentary lifestyle or have taken time off to raise a family, you’re not going to feel like doing it. That’s normal.”

Instead, Azoulay recommends starting small and often—what he calls “setting yourself up to win.” A simple routine of 50 pushups, 50 air squats, and a 50-second plank a few times a week can be transformational. “It’s not about getting jacked. It’s about creating the habit, carving out the time, and sticking to it.”

Bodyweight Exercises You Can Do Anywhere

For those avoiding the gym, bodyweight exercises are the go-to solution. These movements don’t require equipment and can be done in any room of your house. More importantly, they scale with your fitness level.

“If you can only do 10 pushups, but you do them every day, that’s the consistency we’re talking about,” Azoulay notes. He stresses the importance of creating time in your calendar and sticking to it. “Waiting to feel ready doesn’t work. Put it on your calendar. That’s how change starts.”

This approach forms the core of a sustainable home workout strategy and proves that fitness without a gym is entirely achievable.

Functional Strength Training Through Everyday Tasks

Not every workout has to be a dedicated session. Functional strength training—using real-life movements and physical chores—can be just as effective, if not more so.

“Chop wood. Move mulch. Carry heavy bags of soil. Do yard work with purpose,” Azoulay says. These activities develop cardiovascular strength and physical resilience without any equipment. Drawing inspiration from the Blue Zones, regions where people live the longest, Azoulay explains, “They’re not going to the gym. They’re gardening, walking, carrying things—moving with purpose.”

The Power of Outdoor Workouts

Outdoor workouts add another layer of benefit. Exercising in natural environments boosts testosterone production and improves coordination. “A study found that more sunlight increases vitamin D. It eventually boosts testosterone,” says Azoulay.

Whether it’s hiking, walking your dog with a rucksack, such outdoor workouts help engage stabilizer muscles. They also improve proprioception—your body’s ability to coordinate movement.

Accountability and Motivation Hacks

Azoulay admits, “I still need help showing up.” For that reason, he encourages the use of technology to build workout motivation and accountability. Apps like Strong and Fitbod help track workouts. While Habit Trackers and digital calendars reinforce behaviour.

“What gets measured gets managed,” he says, referencing Tim Ferris. “Your environment matters less than your system.” Joining men’s groups or working with a therapist can also reinforce accountability. “Our therapists can help figure out what’s getting in your way—and hold you to your goals.”

Don’t Forget Recovery and Nutrition

Azoulay stresses that muscle is built during rest, not reps. Recovery practices like active stretching, foam rolling, and even light deload weeks are vital.

A 2018 Sports Medicine study confirms that recovery drives adaptation just as much as training.

On the nutrition front, apps like Cronometer and MyFitnessPal help track calories and macronutrients. “Even doing it for a week can be eye-opening,” Azoulay shares. New AI-based apps now let users log meals by simply snapping a photo, making tracking easier than ever.

Fitness is Identity

Ultimately, Azoulay frames fitness as a mental health decision—part of your identity and purpose. “Figure out what your why is,” he advises. “Do you want to protect your family? Be a healthy human? Handle emergencies?”

He shares his motivation: “I live in a mountain town. Part of my identity is being able to take care of my land. That’s why I train.”

Conclusion

Fitness doesn’t have to involve a gym, a perfect plan, or even fancy equipment. For men seeking health, strength, and personal growth, consistency is the key. Start small. Show up regularly. Build the habit. Whether you’re a new dad, a busy professional, or someone navigating emotional challenges, the path to strength begins with movement, and the time to start is now.
