On this episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay is speaking with Michael Ceely. He is a licensed therapist, mental coach, and host of The High Performance Man Podcast. Based in California, Ceely is specializing in therapy for athletes and high achievers who are looking to excel.
Ceely’s path into mental health work starts unexpectedly at age 15, when his parents send him to therapy. At the time, he is a budding competitive cyclist with a rebellious streak. His therapist, Gary, delivers a defining moment of tough love. After Ceely proudly shares a ninth-place race finish, Gary offers a slow, mocking golf clap and asks, “Why didn’t you win?”
That single question shifts Ceely’s mindset. “It was the first time anyone levelled up my standards like that,” he recalls. “It was supportive, but challenging. And it lit a fire in me to push harder.” This early exposure to a masculine therapy style planted the seed for Ceely’s future. It helped his career in sports performance coaching and mental health.
Now, Ceely is bringing those lessons to athletes and high performers. This helps them confront performance anxiety and achieve work-life balance. It helps them to navigate transitions in and out of their sports careers.
Ceely is advocating for what he calls a masculine therapy approach. It includes interventions that are direct, challenging, and rooted in respect. His methods use constructive pressure to break through mental barriers.
“It’s about rapport first,” he explains. “Once trust is built, a well-timed challenge can be the breakthrough moment.” For many men, this style resonates more than constant reassurance. Especially in high performance environments like competitive sports or corporate leadership.
Ceely is uncovering the hidden emotional dynamics behind performance. Many clients first enter their sport as a way to self-soothe during family changes, parental divorce, or personal struggles. While sport can be a positive outlet, it can also become an unhealthy escape.
Ceely often asks clients, “What does failure mean to you?” and “Are you doing this to please yourself or someone else?” These questions help athletes uncover deeper motivations. It helps them address the mental blocks that cause performance anxiety.
He also incorporates somatic techniques. He teaches athletes to match powerful posture with positive self-talk. “You can tell a lot from an athlete’s body language at the plate or starting line,” Ceely says. “Sometimes, just changing the physical stance can change the mental game.”
High performance is not limited to sports. Ceely works with executives, entrepreneurs, and other high achievers. Especially those whose careers have become their “sport.” While their drive brings professional success, it can also cause damage. It may inflict hurt on their relationships, health, and work-life balance.
In these cases, mental coaching focuses on helping clients slow down. It helps them appreciate their accomplishments and create space for personal life. “A lot of men I work with are stuck in the mindset of ‘never enough,’” Ceely observes. “We work on shifting from constant striving to sustainable growth.” He also uses cognitive-behavioural “experiments” to help clients break compulsive work habits. These include intentionally delaying low-stakes emails to challenge the fear of losing control.
Performance anxiety isn’t just a sports problem. It affects public speaking, high-stakes business deals, and even parenting. Ceely sees it as a physiological and psychological loop that can be disrupted with targeted strategies.
By integrating sports performance techniques, he equips clients to perform under pressure. These techniques include visualisation, breathing, and goal reframing. It helps them to maintain mental stability. “You need outlets for aggression and energy,” Ceely says, “whether that’s martial arts, weightlifting, or just pushing hard in your sport.”
For many athletes, ending a sports career can feel like losing their identity. Ceely compares the shift to a veteran leaving the military: highly specialized skills may not seem relevant outside the arena. He helps clients prepare by building their brand and taking on mentorship roles before they retire from competition. “Coaching younger athletes, creating content, or starting a charity keeps you connected to your passion while opening new career paths,” he explains.
Michael Ceely’s approach to high performance blends the rigor of competitive sports with the insight of psychotherapy. He helps athletes, executives, and high achievers manage performance anxiety. He does so through masculine therapy, tough love, and mental coaching. It helps them to achieve work-life balance and succeed beyond their sports careers. Ceely’s message is clear: high performance is as much about mindset and emotional resilience as it is about skill and strategy.
