Finding Equanimity in a F*ed Up World: Lessons from Tim Desmond

January 20, 2025

In today’s episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, we welcome Tim Desmond. He is a distinguished faculty scholar at Antioch University and an acclaimed author. He is a student of the legendary Thich Nhat Hanh. His insights on mental health, Buddhism, and personal development provide a transformative perspective. They help men connect with their masculinity and improve mental wellness. This guidance offers a path to greater self-awareness and growth.

Tim’s journey began in Boston, where he grew up the son of a single, recovering alcoholic mother. A sports scholarship got him to college, but he soon felt unworthy of the opportunity. In his quest to make a meaningful impact, he discovered Thich Nhat Hanh’s book Peace Is Every Step. This sparked a lifelong journey of self-discovery and service. “If you’re trying to create a world with less suffering, you need to learn how to suffer less,” Tim recalls Thich Nhat Hanh teaching. This insight led him to immerse himself in meditation practices. And ultimately pursue a career in clinical psychology.

Tim describes meditation as mental training. It is a practice that allows individuals to cultivate qualities. Such as compassion, equanimity, and emotional resilience. “Whatever quality of mind you want, you can train yourself to develop it,” he explains. For Tim, this training meant learning to transform suffering into freedom. It meant deepening his ability to connect with others authentically.

Equanimity: The Core of Emotional Stability

Tim discussed the concept of equanimity. It is a state of inner balance that enables one to remain compassionate and composed amidst life’s challenges. Tim describes equanimity as “compassion with acceptance.” It’s the ability to care deeply while understanding that not all outcomes are within our control. He likens it to parenting: “I know my child will experience pain, but I still wish for their happiness.”

Equanimity is particularly relevant for men who often feel pressure to suppress emotions. Tim emphasizes the importance of emotional regulation activities. Practices like meditation help individuals overcome fear-driven reactions. This leads to more mindful and balanced responses. “Suffering always has a wish,” he notes. “Understanding the wish behind your fear allows you to address it with compassion.”

Healing Through Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is another cornerstone of Tim’s teachings. He explains that compassion arises when suffering meets kindness. For men who struggle with feelings of inadequacy or existential fear, self-compassion offers a path to healing. Tim shares a simple practice. He says, “Visualize someone or something you love unconditionally, like a puppy or a child, and extend that love toward yourself”. Over time, this practice strengthens the capacity to embrace one’s vulnerabilities with kindness.

Tim’s insights resonate deeply with men navigating societal expectations of masculinity. He challenges the idea that self-worth is tied to productivity or external validation. “You matter because you exist,” he says. “Your feelings, your needs, your life—they matter.”

Meditation: Watching Your Thoughts and Transforming Suffering

Meditation, according to Tim, is about watching your thoughts and understanding their nature. He recalls how early mentors, like Joanne Friday, showed the power of loving-kindness. Their guidance had a transformative impact on him. “Her ability to like people, fearlessly and openly, inspired me to cultivate the same quality,” Tim shares. He encourages men to approach meditation with curiosity and intention. He focuses on men asking themselves, “What is the point of meditation for me?” Whether it’s to reduce anxiety, foster love and self-love, or find inner peace, the practice can be tailored to individual needs. The key is consistency and a willingness to confront one’s inner world.

Moving Beyond Fear to Authentic Connection

Tim highlights the role of fearlessness in building genuine relationships. Many men, he observes, struggle with intimacy due to unacknowledged fears. “Suffering makes us rigid and unapproachable,” he explains. By addressing the roots of their suffering, men can cultivate openness and equanimity. They can pave the way for meaningful connections. He also underscores the importance of hitting a “rock bottom” moment—an opportunity to reassess one’s path and embrace change. “Hitting bottom allows you to see that your current strategies aren’t working,” Tim notes. “From there, you can learn new ways of being.”

Conclusion

Tim Desmond’s wisdom provides a roadmap for men seeking balance. It helps them combine strength with vulnerability and ambition with compassion. Through meditation and self-compassion, men can cultivate equanimity. This helps transform suffering into strength. It also fosters a deeper connection with others. As Tim reminds us, “To be human is to wish for a better world while accepting life as it is.”
