Men’s relationships with Enneagram Type 4 individuals and those with BPD are often emotionally intense. Extreme highs and lows characterize these relationships. The connection is passionate and can be unpredictable. In today’s episode of the Men’s Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay speaks with returning guest, Tamra Sattler. Sattler is an expert therapist. She has worked extensively with individuals with BPD and those who identify as Enneagram Type 4. She sheds light on the complex dynamics that arise in these relationships. “Enneagram Type 4 is creative, vibrant, and deeply emotional,” Sattler explains. “At their healthiest, they bring depth and artistry to relationships. At their most extreme, they may struggle with self-sabotage. They may show emotional outbursts and volatile behavior.”
Marc shares his insights, reflecting on past relationships. “I think every woman I dated before my wife was a Type 4. The passion is undeniable, but so are the emotional swings.”
For many men, these relationships begin with intense attraction and admiration. A Type 4 partner offers emotional depth and authenticity. This can feel like a refreshing change from the emotional detachment many men have developed. The connection brings a sense of warmth and openness. When the intensity turns toxic, men may feel overwhelmed and confused. This can cause them to question their reality.
One of the key points discussed in the episode is the allure of Type 4 and BPD individuals. Men who have difficulty expressing emotions are often attracted to partners who show passion. They are drawn to the emotional intensity. It offers a sense of connection they might be missing.“Many men are emotionally numb,” Azoulay says. “When they meet someone who feels so intensely, it makes them feel alive.” Sattler explains, “Often, the men who enter these relationships have avoidant tendencies. Or they have a history of intrusive parental relationships. They’re drawn in by the intensity, but they don’t always know how to navigate it.“
The early stages of the relationship often include love bombing. A partner showers the other with attention, affection, and validation. But, as the honeymoon phase fades, men may start to notice emotional instability. They observe erratic behavior and manipulation tactics. These include withholding affection or using emotional outbursts to control the dynamic.
A key turning point in these relationships occurs when idealization shifts to devaluation. This change marks a dramatic shift in dynamics. It often leads to emotional turmoil for both partners. Sattler describes how this shift occurs. “In the beginning, the partner is seen as the savior—someone who will ‘complete’ them. But as reality sets in, disappointment grows, and the admiration turns into criticism.”
Men often struggle at this stage, unsure of how to respond. “We see guys trying to fix things logically, but it’s not about logic,” Azoulay says. “It’s about emotional containment. It’s about being able to hold space for their partner without trying to control the storm.” This dynamic can lead to toxic relationships. Men either withdraw completely or find themselves caught in a cycle of trying to ‘earn back’ their partner’s affection.
The first step is to understand the core traits of an Enneagram Type 4 and BPD behavior. Men should ask themselves: Am I walking on eggshells? Am I constantly trying to prove my worth in the relationship? Are emotional outbursts and manipulation affecting my well-being?
“Emotional intelligence in relationships is crucial,” Sattler emphasizes. “Men need to develop their ability to express their own needs. They also need to learn how to validate their partner without losing themselves in the process.”
If emotional outbursts and toxic patterns continue, it’s important to set boundaries. These boundaries should be firm, but also compassionate. This helps maintain emotional well-being and respect in the relationship. “Saying ‘I won’t tolerate this behavior’ isn’t rejection,” Azoulay notes. “It’s self-respect.”
Many men wait until their partner forces them into therapy. “Don’t wait for an ultimatum,” Sattler advises. “Get therapy early. Work on yourself so you can navigate these dynamics from a place of strength.”
Relationships with Enneagram Type 4 and BPD partners can be both exhilarating and exhausting. While they offer deep emotional connections, they also require strong boundaries and self-awareness. Men in these relationships must prioritize their emotional health. They must ensure they are not losing themselves in the process. Tamra Sattler encourages men to do the inner work. She says, “Understand the system you’re in, read books, seek therapy, and most importantly, express your needs early on.”
