Emotional Healing: The Brutal Truth About Shutdown in Men

Emotional Healing: The Brutal Truth About Shutdown in Men

September 30, 2025

Most men believe they are finally finding peace when, in reality, they are only going numb. As Marc Azoulay explains on the Men’s Therapy Podcast, “You’re not angry, you’re not excited, you’re just flat. Your girlfriend or wife asks how you feel, and your answer is always the same: I don’t know, I’m fine. That’s not peace. That’s emotional shutdown.”

This episode is unfolding as a deep exploration of why emotional numbness takes root. It sheds light on how it threatens relationships, careers, and a man’s sense of aliveness. Azoulay points out that behind the quiet surface often lies unprocessed grief. It masks unhealed trauma and the damaging effects of toxic masculinity. “If a guy doesn’t acknowledge his grief, if he doesn’t really process it, he could start to really disconnect from everything; joy, accomplishment, meaning, even peace.”

The conversation follows one of Azoulay’s clients, a man who loses his father at a young age and grows up in the shadow of unresolved pain. In trying to please his grieving mother, he disconnects from his own emotions and slips into a pattern of people-pleasing and numbness. Over time, therapy, inner child work, and connection with nature help. They guide him towards emotional healing and the rediscovery of purpose.

Why Men Go Numb?

Numbness is rarely accidental. According to Azoulay, it often stems from grief that is never fully processed. Many men are taught from a young age to “man up,” stay strong, and avoid vulnerability. While resilience is valuable, living only in toughness creates a narrow band of human experience.

“You may have good reason to be numb,” Azoulay explains. “Maybe you suffered abuse, and you don’t want to feel that. Nobody wants to feel that. But when you numb out one thing, you numb out everything.” This blanket effect leaves men detached not only from pain but also from joy, intimacy, and purpose.

The Role of Trauma and Childhood Experiences

Childhood trauma is another root cause of emotional shutdown. Men raised in unsafe or abusive households often learn early to disconnect as a survival strategy. “You’re grieving a childhood you didn’t have, a safe and secure childhood that didn’t happen,” Azoulay notes. This grief goes unspoken, building walls between men and their inner world.

Over time, this coping mechanism becomes destructive. Without addressing unhealed trauma, men risk becoming emotionally absent in adulthood. Loved ones often describe them as “not fully there,” like a non-player character in a video game, present in body but absent in spirit.

Escaping the Man Box

Azoulay ties these struggles to the broader cultural trap known as the Man Box. It is the rigid expectations that men should always be stoic, dominant, and in control. While toughness has its place, living permanently in the Man Box isolates men from authentic emotional healing. “People stuck in the Man Box end up living a very narrow life, disconnected from meaning and connection,” he emphasizes. Men can begin to dismantle this box and move toward greater emotional freedom. They can do so by challenging toxic masculinity and expanding the range of acceptable emotions.

Tools for Emotional Healing

Healing begins with awareness. Azoulay encourages men to start therapy, where they can safely name and explore their emotions. For those disconnected for decades, even basic emotional literacy can feel like learning a new language. Support groups offer another powerful avenue. They provide community and accountability for men learning to reconnect.

Inner child work is especially transformative. Men rediscover purpose and awaken excitement. They do so by revisiting passions and interests from childhood, such as art, cycling, or outdoor play. Azoulay shares how one client reconnects with nature through wildcrafting and forest bathing. This sparked joy and creativity long buried under years of numbness.

Mindfulness and body awareness practices also help men tune into the physical signals of their emotions. Recognizing a tight throat when afraid or a heavy stomach when sad allows emotions to be processed instead of being buried.

Rediscovering Purpose Through Connection

As men heal, they begin to rediscover purpose and meaning. Excitement becomes the compass, pointing the way toward what truly matters. Azoulay emphasizes, “The goal is just to feel anything, especially when you’ve been numb and disconnected for a long time.”

For his client, emotional healing leads to a deeper appreciation of natural beauty and photography. And ultimately, more authentic relationships. The work of healing never ends, but the quality of life and even the quality of problems dramatically improve.

Conclusion

Emotional healing is not about avoiding pain but learning to feel fully. It is about grief, joy, fear, and love alike. Men can break free from emotional numbness and shutdown. They can do so by confronting unprocessed grief, unhealed trauma, and the restrictive rules of toxic masculinity. Therapy, support groups, mindfulness, and inner child work provide the tools to awaken. They help to reconnect and rediscover purpose.
