Breaking Through Brain Fog – How Screen Addiction and Digital Burnout Are Draining a Generation

Breaking Through Brain Fog – How Screen Addiction and Digital Burnout Are Draining a Generation

July 17, 2025

“You didn’t run a marathon. You didn’t build a company and you didn’t even leave your bed today. So why are you so mentally and physically drained?”

With this provocative question, Marc Azoulay opens a deeply revealing solo episode focused on the hidden causes of brain fog in Gen Z men. Azoulay unpacks a generation that’s paradoxically overwhelmed, not from doing too much, but from doing almost nothing at all.

“These guys aren’t lazy,” Marc explains. “They’re burnt out from doing absolutely nothing—and that’s a different kind of exhaustion.” The episode paints a vivid picture of a generation caught in the grip of digital burnout. Marc highlights battling screen addiction and struggling with motivation issues. Despite being more emotionally aware than generations before.

He shares that Gen Z men regularly experience dopamine fatigue, low drive, and a loss of meaning. They’re spending hours in front of screens—scrolling TikTok, switching between games and social media. They are engaging in short-form content that constantly shifts their attention. “It’s not relaxing,” Marc says. “It’s incredibly draining.”

The Digital Lifestyle and the Illusion of Rest

Marc describes today’s digital environment as a trap disguised as leisure. “Most Gen Z men are on screens all day—phones, tablets, laptops—and while it looks like they’re doing nothing, they’re constantly over-stimulated,” he says. The digital lifestyle—with endless tabs, apps, and feeds—bombards the brain with micro-decisions. This leads to what he calls decision fatigue.

He references Cal Newport’s book Deep Work. He explains that “the brain gets exhausted not from working hard, but from switching tasks rapidly.” The endless cycling between TikTok videos, Reddit threads, and gaming streams leaves the brain chemically depleted. This is what leads to dopamine fatigue—when your brain needs more and more stimulation to feel normal, let alone focused or motivated.

The Hidden Cost of “Doing Nothing”

Scrolling TikTok or watching gaming streams may look harmless, but it activates the brain’s reward system in addictive ways. “It’s like pressing a lever in a Skinner box,” Marc says, referencing the famous psychology experiment. “You’re always searching for the next reward, even if it rarely comes.”

This social media addiction and TikTok addiction keep Gen Z men trapped in a loop of overstimulation without real satisfaction. The result? A pervasive sense of emptiness and fatigue—classic symptoms of brain fog. “You’re constantly flipping emotional states—one minute it’s a meme, next it’s a political rant, then it’s a cooking hack—and your brain can’t catch up,” he explains.

Addictions That Escalate Over Time

Marc doesn’t shy away from the more serious aspects of this digital dependence. He discusses how many young men are facing gaming addiction, porn addiction, and nicotine dependence. “The brain starts building a tolerance,” he says. “They need more extreme content, longer sessions, higher stakes.”

This escalating behaviour further disrupts focus, emotional regulation, and motivation. “It’s not just a distraction—it’s a dissociative state. You’re no longer present in your body, and you’re not processing what you’re feeling.” Over time, these patterns deeply impact self-esteem and the ability to engage meaningfully in relationships or work.

How to Recover from Brain Fog: Practical Solutions

Despite the alarming trends, Marc offers hope and practical tools. The key? Reset the brain by intentionally lowering dopamine stimulation.

“Go to a low-dopamine environment,” he advises. That means taking walks, watching a sunset, or simply sitting outside. “It has to be boring,” he says. “But that boredom is what helps the brain heal.”

He recommends light movement like stretching or walking. Daily routines like waking up at the same time. Simple rituals like drinking tea or journaling. Mindfulness practices and meditation. “These actions may feel unexciting,” he says, “but they’re renewing instead of draining. They give your brain a chance to reset.”

Focus Is a Muscle—And It Needs Training

One of Marc’s most powerful insights is that focus can be trained. He echoes Cal Newport’s controversial claim that “most ADHD isn’t neurological—it’s a lack of focus training.”

At Men’s Therapy Online, Marc and his team help clients build this mental muscle through therapy for young adults. “We work with Gen Z men every day who feel stuck,” he shares. “And when they start cutting back on high-dopamine habits, they rediscover drive, clarity, and purpose.”

Conclusion

This episode shines a necessary spotlight on the mental health struggles of Gen Z men, offering both a diagnosis and a path forward. Brain fog, driven by digital burnout, dopamine fatigue, and compulsive screen use, isn’t just a personal failing—it’s a symptom of modern life. Young men can reclaim their focus and begin to heal. They can do so through intentional low-stimulation practices, routine-building, and therapeutic support. As Marc Azoulay puts it, “You’re not lazy. Your brain is just tired—and it needs your help.”
